House Republicans passed a series of bills Wednesday evening that would enact a strict voter ID law in Michigan. Michigan already requires voters to present an ID at their polling locations. Adam Reames, the legislature policy director for the Michigan Department of State, said the department opposes the bills because the current system works effectively to verify voters' identity. He said the ature requirement would require poll workers to undergo training that would be costly and lead to the unequal application of the requirement.
The House amended the process for counting provisional ballots. Instead of local clerks counting provisional ballots after a voter verifies their identity, the board of county canvassers made up of two Democrats and two Republicans would tabulate the ballots.
